Although I’m not a big fan of poultry exhibitions – most heritage flocks are just too small and inbred to withstand ‘show breeding’ – I love a beautiful bird as much as anyone else. And even more if it is one of my favourite Light Sussex!
Sandy Ross of Terra Cotta, ON has a lovely flock of them, based on TNHH birds and her own judicious breeding. She started winning over the previous Ontario incumbents 2 years ago, totally mopped the floor with them last year, and this year (2015) she took birds down to the Ohio Nationals in November, winning Best Light Sussex!
Meanwhile Ev Gilmar, the breeder of TNHH’s Barred Rocks, entered some of her big boys and girls in the big Coombs show, and won 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Barred Rock… and then Champion American. Gee – I thought that title belonged to the Australorps! The judge, Gary Agajanin of California, said he was so pleased to see Rocks with good bodies. Oh, yes!
