As proud as we are of our classic dual purpose Light Sussex flock (see under Dual Purpose) we realize that many flock owners have no use for the males, and they would appreciate better laying than a dual purpose bird can do. So we have used Production Breeding techniques to hone a line of Light Sussex that is a better layer and has the smaller body of a laying specialist. 2018 is the year we are launching this new line at the hatchery. If you love the look of the Light Sussex but really just want hens, and want a lot of eggs in all seasons, try our new Light Sussex Layers.
We have become very fond of this ‘lite’ version of Light Sussex, and at the hatchery we refer to them as ‘Luchins’. They are more sensitive and less brave than their dual purpose sisters, but they are not nervous or high strung like commercial layers. The Luchins are much less seasonal than our dual purpose Sussex and will do well from a late summer or early fall hatch. They are also less likely to go broody or get overweight.
